Blanca Quezada

Mata Ortiz and
Casas Grandes
Geometric design plus sculpted lid with geometric design on a polychrome jar

Blanca Quezada de Renteria is the wife of Mata Ortiz potter Cruz Renteria. They live and work in Barrio Americano in Mata Ortiz. Quezada is a common name in Chihuahua and Blanca is not related in any way to the more famous family of Juan Quezada.

Blanca learned to make pottery from her neighbor, Graciela Gallegos. She tends to work with local white clay and makes plates, bowls and jars, many with sculpted and cut-out lids. She also likes to decorate her pieces with intricate recreations of Mimbres-style designs in the Porvenir style (meaning: decorate almost every square centimeter of a piece's surface).
