Blanca Arras

Mata Ortiz and
Casas Grandes

Polychrome jar with sgraffito and painted bird, butterfly, flower and branch design

Blanca Isela Arras was born in Nuevo Casas Grandes in 1971. Nuevo Casas Grandes is located where the road from Mata Ortiz meets the highway in the city. Many Mata Ortiz potters have moved to Nuevo Casas Grandes for the schools and the conveniences. Blanca went the other way, to Mata Ortiz, only a few years ago, and learned how to make and decorate pottery.

She seems to like to do sgraffito and multi-color painted designs of hummingbirds, butterflies and flowers. She signs most of her pieces: Blanca Isela Arras Olivas.
